ABOUT
From encaustic painting to assemblages and cast sculptural work, Shostak’s pieces are tactile, multi-layered explorations of identity and belonging. There is storytelling at play with the juxtaposition of symbols and materials that speak to our common experiences.
Through the rendering of the artifacts of our lives in unexpected form and medium, Shostak both honours the past and questions the present. A simple shirt is a uniform, an applied identity, a costume, a shield - as oil painting it is sumptuous and ethereal; rendered in cement, it references a headstone or relic. There is both a playfulness and reverence in the work.
Shostak holds an MFA in Sculpture from York University and a BFA from Queens University in Kingston, ON. She resides in Toronto with her husband and two boys whose own creativity is a constant source of inspiration.
Her work can be found in personal and commercial collections across North America. She has also participated in a handful of solo art shows and group exhibitions.
